It looks to me very natural - like something that could be done by a straight shot with a polarizer - why the need for HDR?

OK - but sharpness has nothing to do with HDR, has it?

You made me put on my "thinking cap" here :),
Yes and No, in digital photography when you sharpen an image you are basically adding more contrast to certain areas of the photo. When working with an HDR image you have more data to manipulate using the sharping algorithm in a program such as Photoshop ; so essentially this allows you to push- sort of speak- the image well beyond what you could do with a regular 8 megapixel image.
